Reflection on the Gospel of the Friday In The First Week Of Advent |
Luke 10:1-16 |
Today’s gospel passage narrates the mission of the seventy. Jesus was preparing them and sending them out in pairs to spread the Word of God. One of the first steps is to pray to God to send more people to support them in their mission of spreading the Kingdom of God.
He instructs them to avoid wasting time on social niceties, and rather work with a sense of urgency and single minded focus on preaching the message of God. He gives them a glimpse of what to expect – not a warm welcome, but rather resentment and rejection. In this context, he refers to the cities of Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum which rejected him and hence will face the consequences as they have in effect rejected God the Father who has sent him.
We have completed one week of Advent, a warning to be on our guard and be alert to face the Lord in judgement. This passage also is another form of warning to heed to God’s call and to listen to him. To see the signs and react to change our paths.
We ask the Lord for his grace to be more responsive and open our hearts to his call.
