Matthew 12:1-8
The Pharisees criticised Jesus as his disciples plucked grain on the Sabbath to feed themselves, but Jesus responds with a practical answer and gives the example of David eating the Bread of Presence as an analogy. Our reaction to a situation requires a wholesome approach and not just by going by the book. Very often we become rigid in maintaining the traditions and customs while completely ignoring the intention or the initial thought process behind it. Laws are meant to discipline rather than simply punish or reject.
As Catholics, we observe the Sabbath on Sunday. In a 24/7 working atmosphere, how important is the Sabbath to us today? Do we devote our Sunday to the Lord, and to work in his garden or is it consumed like any other day for our material requirements? Every Sunday is a mini Easter, the day of our Lord’s glorious resurrection and victory over death and sin and Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath. Let us prioritize our time for the Lord atleast on Sundays and make him the focus of our attention.
