Reflection on the Gospel of the Twenty-Sixth Sunday

Matthew 21: 28-32 |
Are you an authentic Christian?
In the Gospel we are challenged to live the Christian life authentically and not superficially. We are charged with a mission to make disciples of Christ through living an authentic Christian life. However, some of us are like the second son who says yes to the Father’s task but doesn’t do it while others are like the first son who has no interest in doing the task but later repents and get the task done. Both attitudes are basically incorrect.
Why can’t be authentic from the very beginning? Why is it such a challenge to live an authentic Christian life? The answer is clear and simple. We don’t have the mind of Christ, that’s the attitude of Christ. We are more concerned about things of this world and our own needs, our own wants that we fail to understand that God is interested in us. He is waiting for us to respond to his loving invitation. We fail to recognize that He can provide us with more perfect blessings than what the world has to offer. Unfortunately we listen to him only when we have tried everything else, regret our foolish mistakes, ask him for forgiveness and then do what he asks of us.
Let us ask the Lord for his mercy when we have been like the first son doing things our way and returning back to him after regrets. Also ask for mercy for the times when we have been Christian just for namesake like the second son. And we hope that the Lord continue to guide us, mend our damaged hearts so that we can live authentic Christian lives rooted in a deep relationship with him to have a mind like Christ.
