Reflection on the Gospel of the Friday
|
Luke 21: 29-33 |
In today’s gospel Jesus gives a parable of the fig tree. The signs of the fig tree will be so obvious that people will be able ‘to see and know for themselves’ what is happening. If people can read the signs in nature, they should be willing and able to read the signs of their deliverance.
Jesus’ Disciples must be alert at all times lest they grow lazy in their pursuit of holiness. They are to keep praying. They are also to maintain hearts free of sin and daily distractions. Hope and not despair is part of the Christian life even now as people wait for the second coming. The ultimate event of Jesus’ coming in glory should not deter the believers.
Those who endure, who bear witness, who remain alert in prayer, have nothing to fear from the coming of the Son of Man. For them it is the time of liberation.
We are called to be on our guard, alert, watchful or we will be taken by surprise!
