Mark 10:28-31
Man is an ambitious creature and proud at that. This is strongly opposite of Jesus’ Key of Redemption, that is gratefulness, humility and love. Scholars often refer to Matthew’s Gospel as the Topsy-Turvy Gospel meaning the Upside Down Gospel. Matthew has taken and expanded what Mark is saying here in verse 31. To be first be last and to be last to be first. Meaning leave your ambition in life aside and surrender to the Love of God. Matthew though the Sermon on the Mount brings clarity to Jesus Message. He Jesus is the Truth and he sheds light on darkness to dispel it, as when he corrects the Pharisees regarding Divorce. Humanity had covered the Truth with its convenient opinions to hide the Truth. They had made divorce be okay and covered it with the authority of Moses to practice it. Jesus says no, the truth is that Divorce is incompatible with Reality. There is no place for divorce in the created order of God.
Taking this forward and analysing today’s society, we are similarly layering Truth with our opinions, and convenient understanding of things. It is I, Me and Myself. Within this how can we really discover Truth? Only when we choose to step out of the rat race of Pride and choose to let go of ambition, then we open doors in our lives to evolve into being Christ like. Read the words or verse 31 literally. Choose to loose that you may win, choose to be last to be awarded the first position.
