Reflection on the Gospel of the Friday
|
John 11:19-27 |
We have heard this story very often, and one of the immediate things that come to mind is the humanness of Jesus. The sorrow of losing a dear friend, the visit to console the family and share in their moment of grief and his reaching out to help them and fulfill their immediate needs.
What was more important is the faith that the sisters of Lazarus had in Jesus. They believed in him and his ability to bring their brother back to life. Jesus affirms his sovereignty over the present and future lives of believers and physical death has no power over them. Martha’s response to Jesus’s question is a whole hearted response “ Yes Lord, I believe that you are the Christ….”!
Such response and faith can come only through a close relationship with Christ, a listening ear and an open heart. Are we convinced that Christ is the Son of God and that we will have eternal life in him. To live in him, we have to die to ourselves – are we ready to rise again?
