Matthew 9:32-38
There is a healing that takes place. A mute is blessed with speech and there are three reactions.
In the First century the belief was that all sickness and affliction was due to evil spirits. Within this the common people saw the miracle for it was, something that they had ever seen. They could only marvel at this miracle and ask the appropriate question, who then is Jesus? The Pharisees who were supposed to be the pious and qualified people who should have been driving away evil spirits and healing people, were stuck speechless by this and similar miracles of Jesus. They had no way to explain how Jesus’ holiness could exceed theirs. They could only bad mouth Jesus. So it was convenient for them to say Jesus himself is a demon, and the chief demon at that, hence he is able to do this miracles because of his demonic authority and demonic power.
The third response is of Jesus himself. He is not worried about about all the empty gongs of his opposers, he is content with concerning himself with touching hearts, and making them whole. He realises the necessity of this, but also realises the huge task that it is in itself. Hence he comments, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
What say you, will you take the yoke, and with earnestness join Jesus in ploughing the field…
