Reflection on the Gospel of the Fifth Sunday
|
Matthew 5: 13-16 |
Today’s Gospel is a continuation of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount from last Sunday. However, today we are thrown a challenge and it’s a BIG one. We are called to be the salt of the earth and the light to the world. But why salt and light? Well basically salt is a preservative that adds flavour and light is needed to make your way through the darkness. So we are called to be witnesses that prevent the decay, rotting within us and help out with illuminating the world with the truth.
We know its difficult and yes we aren’t going to be perfect. But that’s the problem, we expect perfection from ourselves. We want to be the best salty preservative and the brightest light. Wow! That’s not going to happen. We are called to rely on God’s grace, make an effort and just try our best to be witnesses to God’s truth and take action against moral decay. We must work together as a family or community to bring out the best. Jesus wants us to succeed and he will aid our sincere effort because he has called us to be his sheep. We are not called to just exist but made in His image for a good purpose.
Let us look at some of the tips given to us by Isaiah in the first reading to be the salt and light during the week ahead.
