Reflection on the Gospel of the Friday
|
Mark 8: 34-9:1 |
Christ calls everyone along with his disciples and gives them this teaching, indicating that this is a call to all, not just his disciples. The principles of discipleship are specified and laid down – self denial, willingness to take up one’s cross and consistent effort to follow the master.
To gain life in the Kingdom of God, we have to lose it for the good of the other. If we deny the cross, we will also not be entitled to the glory of eternal life with God. One has to be in communion with God to see the rewards of the Kingdom of God come to glory.
The call is made and the conditions laid down by our Lord himself. Are we willing to take up our cross and follow him? As we prepare for the holy season of Lent, let us reflect on this call which is for each one of us. He calls us by name to be his disciple. We offer ourselves to him, to let his spirit work within us, to stir us up to be his faithful followers.
