Reflection on the Gospel of the Third Sunday of Easter |
Luke 24: 13-35 |
The road to Emmaus. It’s a journey of hopelessness that turns into hope. We may say that one of the two disciples was Cleophas but the other is just a guess. However, the other could well be you. We often find ourselves sharing our disappointments, challenges and worries with the people who we trust the most. We walk the challenges of life on the road often alone or seeking help from others not knowing that in your most challenging situations Jesus is walking with you, listening to all that worries you, ready to strengthen you and guide you if you’re ready to recognize him.
Yes! Jesus doesn’t walk with you like another human being does or talk to you like your best friend on the phone, therefore it’s easy to forget that he exists. Away from sight away from the mind, that’s the fickle human mind. But it’s in that hopeless moment if we turn to have a conversation with Jesus, we say that I recognize you Lord as my strength, my guru, my protector, I trust in you.
Without Jesus we will walk aimlessly, searching but never satisfied. Our hunger and our search ends when we meet Jesus.
The Emmaus road journey is also a lesson about the Eucharist. The two disciples hear the Word (Jesus’ teaching), eat the bread (receive Jesus at the Eucharistic table) and go and tell the Good News (renewed discipleship) as they immediately return to Jerusalem that very same evening.
After a week in the world, it’s the Sabbath Sunday.. a day we rest in Jesus, talk to him, hear him, receive him in our hearts so we can battle the challenges ahead during the week ahead with Christ by our side.
Knock, knock! Are you listening?
