Reflection on the Gospel of the Twenty-Ninth Sunday
|
Matthew 22: 15-21 |
Whose image is this? Jesus asks the question about the image on the Roman coin to the disciples of pharisees and the herodians. Like the pharisees and scribes during the time of Jesus, we too can be caught in legalities. Is this the right thing to do? Should I manipulate the situation for my own benefit?
The question about what’s expected in any dilemma is Jesus’ straight forward response. Whose image is this? It is a reminder to look at ourselves in the mirror. Aren’t we created in the image and likeness of God? If we are made in God’s image we are expected to give ourselves completely to God because we belong to him. When faced with a challenge or given a mission we must make ourselves completely available and move forward in God.
Do we reflect the image of the creator or like the pharisees we seek the image of the world with power and wealth for ourselves?
