The Bible: The Power of Rebirth

Strength in our Weakness

Friday in the Octave of Easter
Reading 1
Acts 4:1-12
Responsorial Psalm
ps 118:1-2 and 4, 22-24, 25-27a
Alleluia
Psalms 118:24
Sequence - Optional
Victimae paschali laudes
Gospel
John 21:1-14
Gloria • Hanc igitur • in Eucharitic Prayer I • Optional Sequence • Preface Easter I • Proper Communicantes • Proper Mass

Imagine the state that Peter is in. He has denied Jesus. Jesus has risen, and meeting everyone, including him, but not saying anything about his denial. Add to this that Jesus is no where on the horizon for a few days… They are in Galilee as instructed by Jesus through Mary Magdalene. He is at the end of his patience with himself. I am going back to our old trade. I have lost it all – I have lost Jesus. Probably it is because of me that Jesus is not showing Himself to the rest…

And then even as they are fishing, Jesus reminds him of his call. The promise He made to him when He called him – I will make you fishers of men. Add to that the 153 fish they catch – symbolically meaning all peoples. We will complete this reflection with Peter’s reinstatement in the next Gospel Reading.

But what we need to remember here is what Jesus is doing with Peter, and also with you and me. He empties us of ourselves, so we can be ready and correct to be filled with Jesus. We many a times may be in the shoes of Peter, feeling guilty, depressed, feeling abandoned. Change your gaze, reflect on who Jesus/God is. He is faithful, He is true, and He will never leave you, nor forsake you. Trust Him.

Bible Verse For Today

Alleluia, alleluia. This is the day the LORD has made;let us be glad and rejoice in it. Alleluia, alleluia.
