Isaiah in the First reading speaks of hope. He is referring to, and calling out to Sodom and Gomorrah, but we all know that they were destroyed and their destruction was because of their wickedness. So in referring to them and calling out to them to acknowledge their sinfulness and change their ways, God is saying sin matters because it is the stumbling block, against which humanity falters in its pursuit of God. But sin should not matter, what matters is repentance with humility to acknowledge our state of being in sin, and needing help. God it is who will come and make out lives complete by cleaning us and transforming us.
Jesus in the Gospel reading is telling us, that the Law matters, because it in its own way reveals to us God (Pharisees sitting on Moses seat), but if one is not humble, then the person will miss the point of what God is calling us to be humble and seek a relationship with God. The Pharisees missed the point of humility, and because of this were blind to many things, including Jesus being the Christ. The best attitude we can subscribe to is that of the Tax-collector, from the parable of Pharisee and Tax Collector.
Humility is associated with a sincere heart, and a sincere heart, God does not spurn.
