Covenants in the Old Testaments were for Life, and based on the type of covenants, they lasted till the death of any of the partners to the covenant, like in marriage, when I person died, only then was the surviving member allowed to marry again.

In the Sinai Covenant, once the Covenant was confirmed and sealed, God invited all the elders to come and dine with Him, midway up the mountain. and these joined Moses in the feast with God. Now Jesus, in today’s Gospel, is alluding to that covenant and that process. He is God, one of the party to the Sinai Covenant, by which Israel and God were covenanted. And He God was going to die on the cross and that is of double importance. In Jesus dying, the old covenant was going to cease/finish. Israel was going to be free to choose, whom it would or would not want to associate with; Yahweh or someone else.

But then, God in Jesus was offering Israel, and the world at large a new Covenant, at the same time. Everyone is free to choose and become part of this New Covenant. Jesus at the Last Supper, by choosing to be the sacrificial Lamb of the New Covenant, enacts the New Covenant. God shows favour of the new Covenant, by raising the Lamb, Jesus, to life. The Eucharist then, is the feast of the New Covenant, where God comes and dines with us. Those of us who believe, need to climb the mountain, to join the feast. The Eucharist is the One Feast and the One Celebration, made available to all of us, in all time and space.

Blessed is everyone, for the invitation to the feast is for everyone. Here remember the parable of the Great Feast.
