The Bible: The Power of Rebirth

Burden Bearer

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Reading 1
Job 7:1-4, 6-7
Responsorial Psalm
Psalms 147:1-2, 3-4, 5-6
Reading 2
1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23
Alleluia
Matthew 8:17
Gospel
Mark 1:29-39
Creed • Gloria • Preface Sunday • Proper Mass

Job in the First Reading is expressing the condition of humanity, post the fall of Adam and Eve, and it echoes God’s analysis/narration of what the life of Adam and Eve and their descendants would be because of the fall (Genesis 3).

Paul on the other hand is contrasting life before the Good News Jesus brought and achieved with how his own life is now. He proclaims; saving from the life of hardship and failure (you can visualise Israel’s slavery in Egypt) has been achieved and He is burdened in a happy way to announce this to everyone. But please note it is up to us after accepting Jesus’ Freedom and Saving, either to join ourselves to Him or still retain the mentality of slaves.

The Gospel shows us Jesus’ ministry of saving and Good News. Here he heals the sick, casts out evil spirits, making people whole. He still continues to do this even today, especially at the eucharist and through His Word. It is up to us to believe and live in Jesus’ freedom or dis-believe and still live as slaves.

Believe.
