Jesus Foretells His Death
Reflection on the Gospel of the Tuesday In The Fifth Week Of Lent |
John 8: 21-30 |
In today’s gospel reading what I would like to draw our attention to is Jesus’ relationship with the Father. It’s only John the evangelist that highlights this unique and intimate relationship Jesus has with Yahweh, that of with Abba Father and Jesus as Son.
Even though divine Himself, Jesus acknowledges & gives complete credit to the Father by his statement ‘𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙄 𝙙𝙤 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙛 𝙢𝙮𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙄 𝙨𝙖𝙮 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙖𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙢𝙚’. And thus reveals the mystery of the unity between the Father and Son. Jesus was totally in tune with His Father, in His thinking and doing. The harmony between them is total and divine, which is once again confirmed in His statement ‘𝙄 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙙𝙤 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙚𝙨 𝙝𝙞𝙢’. This also reveals the heart of Jesus’ spirituality.
Don’t you think that by the above statements Jesus like everything He said and did is asking us on a deeper level to imitate Him that is for us to strive to have this similar unique and intimate relationship with the Triune God? Relationships develop through time being spent, in the sharing of our desires, through loving and listening to the Lord. Let not a single day go without our effort in seeking God.
What is absolutely admirable here about Jesus and must make us fall in love with Him, more and more is that unlike the spiritual leaders of the world today who draw attention to themselves, here is Jesus drawing our attention to the Almighty Father from whom He has learnt everything. Dear friends in Christ we know for sure, that when we knock on God’s door, Jesus will open it and invite us in to meet His and our Father!
